Chapter 13
The car's engine roared as they sped after their target, weaving through the streets with reckless abandon. Artemis could feel the raw power beneath her feet where she sat in the back as Wade urged the vehicle forward. Her gaze remained fixed on the red car, its taillights burning bright like the eyes of a demon in the night.
The tension in the car was palpable, like a live wire threatening to snap at any moment. Artemis' heart pounded in her chest as she gripped the door handle tightly, knuckles white from the strain. The sound of the engine and the tires screeching against the pavement filled her ears, drowning out everything else.
"Keep up," Cameron ordered, his voice cold and controlled. "We can't afford to lose him."
Agent Wade nodded, his eyes never leaving the road ahead. His hands moved with practiced precision, guiding the car through the winding streets and narrow alleys. There was an artistry to his driving that couldn't be denied; every turn was calculated, each maneuver executed with skill.
"Get me closer," Cameron said, his voice tense but firm. "I need a clean shot at the tires."
Artemis watched as they closed in on the red car, her anxiety mounting with each passing second. She tried to calm herself by focusing on her breathing, just as she'd been taught. Inhale for four counts, hold for four, exhale for four. The familiar rhythm helped to steady her nerves, even as her thoughts raced with the implications of what would happen if they failed to apprehend the suspect.
"Almost there," Wade said, his voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through his veins. "Just hang on."
Cameron nodded, his gaze locked on the fleeing vehicle. He raised his gun, preparing to fire once they were within range.
"Go for the tires!" Wade shouted over the roar of the engine.
Without hesitation, Cameron gripped his gun tightly and leaned out of the window, the wind whipping through his usually disheveled hair as he took aim. Artemis held her breath, her heart pounding in her chest as she watched him. This was it â their one chance to bring the suspect to justice.
"Come on, come on," Cameron muttered under his breath, his eyes narrowing as he tried to line up his shot.
"Damn it!" Cameron cursed as he fired two shots at the fleeing vehicle, the sound deafening in the confined space of the car. Artemis flinched, her hands instinctively covering her ears as she fought to stay focused.
Cameron's shots whizzed past the swerving red car, clipping the bumper but missing the tires.
The red car swerved to the left, avoiding the passenger side now.
Its door scraped against the concrete barrier, sending out a flurry of sparks.
"No shot!" Cameron yelled. He was practically sitting in the window now but had to duck as they moved through a tight tunnel that dipped under a railroad.
"He's faster!" Wade shouted, gritting his teeth.
Artemis' mind whirred. She pieced together the eventualities. The scene played out in her mind like a choreographed dance.
Forester was on the right side of the car.
